Coming of Age Editorial Review
Lost Illusions by Honore de Balzac, translated by Raymond MacKenzie, is an enthralling and highly readable novel that takes readers on a journey through the depths of 19th century Parisian society. The story follows a beautiful but naive poet who becomes entangled with loose women and greedy men. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in this time period and for those who appreciate great storytelling. One of the standout features of this translation by Raymond MacKenzie is his ability to make the long introductory and interruptive passages interesting and essential, addressing a common issue with Balzac's works. MacKenzie's translation brings a fresh and captivating perspective to the narrative, making it an enjoyable reading experience. The sequel to Lost Illusions, titled Lost Souls (also translated by MacKenzie), is equally masterful and should not be missed. Overall, Lost Illusions is an exceptional novel that provides a brilliant depiction of 19th century French provincial and Parisian life. Balzac's storytelling abilities are unmatched, and MacKenzie's translation only enhances the reader's enjoyment of the book.
