The transformer can run any 12V bulbs, including halogen and LED, up to 150 watts worth. There is no minimum, and it can even run just one 60-watt 12 volts bulb without burning it out. While this transformer is generally well-received, some issues have been reported. If one of the landscape lights is pointed at the unit, the light from it can fool the photocell into thinking it's daytime/sunrise/etc and turn the lights off.
